It only lasted a few minutes. But with an audience of over 14 million people, the smallest message can have the effect of a bomb. This is what Kylian Mbappé discovered to his cost. The player who recently arrived at Real Madrid after years at Paris-Saint-Germain had a very restless night.

In the space of a few minutes, hackers took control of his account on X. They took the opportunity to post various messages, notably about Bitcoin: “I support Bitcoin and I think you should too”.

Other messages concerned are more about football, such as “I'm going to Manchester United” (an English club known for having approached Kylian Mbappé in recent months). We could also read for a few moments “Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player in the history of football, this dwarf is not the GOAT”. The term “dwarf” refers to Lionel Messi, who is often mocked for his small stature. GOAT is a sports term meaning “Greatest of All Time”.

A major hack

Finally, the hacking of his X account should not be detrimental to Kylian Mbappé. While it’s never pleasant to lose control of your social media accounts (especially when you have 14 million people following you), the hackers didn’t have time to do much damage.

After messages about football and the player’s contractual situation, other texts were published, this time with clear political demands. In particular, it was a question of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

Hackers have also posted more or less violent messages of support for Palestine in its war against the State of Israel since October 7. The main person concerned has not yet reacted. He will be present at a press conference this evening on the occasion of his team's match in the Canaries against Las Palmas, the subject should be discussed there.

Securing your social networks, an imperative

This mishap nevertheless reminds us that it is crucial to secure your social networks. To avoid being hacked like Kylian Mbappé, cybersecurity experts recommend using long and complex passwords. They do not have to make sense and contain numbers, letters and special characters.

In addition to the password, other protections such as two-factor authentication must be activated. While the latter is quite common with a code sent by SMS or email, cybersecurity experts recommend using two-factor authentication with special applications, which are much more difficult to hack.
