The year 2024 was an opportunity for Apple to clean up its product catalog. And among the devices abandoned by society, several of them made headlines for the wrong reasons…

iPhone 15 Pro and FineWoven case

Starting with the iPhone 15 Pro, which will only have been officially marketed by Apple for about a year. Although this is not surprising, the apple brand having a habit of putting devices aside when releasing new ones, this specific smartphone has been the subject of controversy on several occasions.

Victim of overheating problems, it has also been strongly criticized for its ultra-energy-hungry battery compared to other recent models of the firm. The various updates have not solved all these flaws, making it one of the least popular iPhones.

The launch of the iPhone 15 range in 2023 was accompanied by the launch of a new case, replacing the leather one: the FineWoven, or fine weave. Problem, Users were quick to report issues with the new recycled material, which marked at the slightest touch with nails or keys. Some even reported changes in color and texture, with stains appearing and the logo fading.

Apple acted quickly. The company no longer offers a finely woven case for the iPhone 16, although a variant is available for Apple Watch bands.

An Apple Watch at the heart of the controversy

2024 also marked the end of the official marketing of the iPad Pro M2 and the Apple Watch Series 9. The tablet has not really undergone a major update compared to its previous version, the iPad Pro M1. On the contrary, its accessories drained its battery when it was not in use, provoking remonstrances from users.

The smartwatch, for its part, was at the heart of a lively controversy across the Atlantic. Accused of patent infringement, Apple was forced to exclude its blood oxygen capture functionality for several weeks in the country.

Goodbye Lightning port

At WWDC 2024, many expected Apple to finally launch the second iteration of its AirPods Max. This was partly the case. While the 2020 version has indeed been shelved, its successor hasn't really received any major updates, other than the introduction of a USB-C port to replace the Lightning. Enough to disappoint more than one, especially since the headset still lacks basic features like lossless audio support…

Also, Apple said goodbye to its Magic accessories equipped with a Lightning port, like the Keyboard and Mouse. Their new iteration is thus available with USB-C, although the mouse's charging port is still located under the device.

  • In 2024, Apple shelved several products, some of which were very controversial.
  • This is particularly the case for the iPhone 15's FineWoven case, or the AirPods Max equipped with a Lightning port.
  • Many of these products have been abandoned to make way for USB-C, required by the European Union.
