Top 5 best smartphones for children (2024):

  • Honor 200 Pro
  • iPhone SE 3
  • Poco

In 2024, many mobile manufacturers will offer smartphones that are both more affordable than premium models but also rather complete in terms of technical specifications. So many advantages that suit rather well a mobile intended for the youngest, who are now starting to want to equip themselves from middle school.

Before moving on to the comparison, a simple disclaimer: let's remember that today, scientific studies recommend drastically limiting screen time, especially among young people. It's all about mental health, with the key to reducing the risk of depression or anxiety. What's more, it is advisable to install a parental control solution on the devices used by young people. A word to the wise.

the Honor 200 Pro © Presse-citron

The Honor 200 Pro is perhaps the best smartphone from the eponymous brand today. This device is equipped with 12 to 16 GB of RAM depending on the model, for 256 GB to 1 TB of internal storage. With a weight of only 199 g, the device also offers a premium design at a price that is much more affordable than equivalent devices from the competition. The screen is also excellent, with a definition of 1,224 x 2,700 pixels for a density of 437 ppi. The brightness also reaches 4,000 nits, here, so the device can be used in direct sunlight without worry.

Choosing the Honor 200 Pro also means betting on a device that has been praised by critics. Indeed, our own test of the mid-range mobile was able to prove that it is a quality device. What's more, it offers good battery life, which is clearly not given to all smartphones under 800 euros these days. It must be said that here, the battery offers a capacity of 5,200 mAh: that's considerable. In addition, this mobile is IP65 certified, so it can easily withstand splashes without being too damaged.

The Honor 200 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, engraved with a precision of four nanometers. This offers sufficient performance in 99% of cases, with controlled heating most of the time. In short, you can also use this mobile for multitasking or gaming. Unfortunately, no charger is provided in the box and the artificial intelligence provided in the mobile is perfectible. Moreover, as you will have understood, this device presents itself to the general public as good value for money. Below, find the best prices currently available on the device from French retailers.

l&amp ;#8217;Third generation iPhone SE © Presse-citron.net

The third-generation iPhone SE is THE best mid-range smartphone from Apple. With this device, the apple company is also offering us its most affordable new smartphone. However, for a child or teenager who does not need to spend hours on their screen, there is no need to break the bank. What's more, the third-generation iPhone SE has a screen whose diagonal is limited to only 4.7 inches. In other words, it is not comfortable enough for streaming all night under the covers. The price, however, may put some people off, since it is set above the symbolic bar of 500 euros for the French market.

With the third-generation iPhone SE, you of course also benefit from privileged access to the integrations of the Apple ecosystem. For example, the phone can synchronize its received notifications with the iPad or Mac interface. We regret, however, that Apple Intelligence is not compatible with this mid-range smartphone – at least for the moment. Moreover, the promise of the third-generation iPhone SE is rather well respected and the mobile does not flinch during the majority of requests, despite its limited technical sheet.

With a third-generation iPhone SE, you should also know that you don't benefit from Face ID. However, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor offers exceptional results and the touchscreen is very responsive. What's more, Apple apps are known for their ergonomics and efficiency. As a bonus, this mobile allows you to benefit from a mandatory two-year manufacturer's warranty. 5G also offers very good results, and during the day, the photos captured with the single rear lens are of good quality. the Poco X6 Pro from Xiaomi © POCO

Real firepower at a reduced price. Here's how to define the Poco X6 Pro in a few words. Indeed, although its price is limited to 349 euros, this mobile offers high-flying performance without flinching and is dedicated even to the most gamer of our offspring. The device also gives pride of place to a refresh rate of one hundred and twenty images per second, while you have to pay more than a thousand euros to get it from Apple, for comparison.

The Poco X6 Pro from Xiaomi, moreover, offers superb value for money on Android. The design remains modern and without frills, and the presence of fast charging is also a brand asset for teenagers who are late for school in the morning. So, yes, we must admit that this mobile is not the best in photo among all the devices of the kind. But at least the power is there, what's more Wi-Fi 6 is part of it for flawless connectivity. And of course, you can also pair wireless headphones via Bluetooth like with the competition.

With the Poco X6 Pro from Xiaomi, you also benefit from 8 to 12 GB of RAM depending on the model chosen. On the internal storage side, the manufacturer offers 256 GB or 512 GB to users here, but no more. On the other hand, there is no SD card reader with the Poco X6 Pro, but the cloud can largely compensate for this type of inconvenience. Finally, you should know that this mobile is powered by Android 14 with the HyperOS overlay and a Mediatek Dimensity 8300 Ultra processor engraved with a precision of four nanometers.

In addition, the Poco X6 Pro is protected, at the front, by Corning Gorilla Glass.

the Google Pixel 8a © Google

With the Pixel range, Google offers us mobiles often considered to be the best photophones on the planet. Here, the results in low light conditions are particularly excellent and you will almost never have to edit the shots in post-production to obtain the desired result. The Google Pixel 8a has a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle with f/2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view, not to mention its 64-megapixel wide-angle with f/1.9 aperture at 26 millimeters. Count here on 8 GB of RAM to support your ms s actions and also on storage limited to 256 GB of memory at most.

The Google Pixel 8a also includes many features boosted by artificial intelligence thanks to Gemini Nano, like the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 from the same manufacturer. You can thus autocomplete the sentences you write in your emails or even take advantage of advanced translation options, thanks to this smartphone. If you can't afford to offer a high-end Pixel to your children, the 8a is therefore a rather good alternative. What's more, you can easily find it for under 500 euros at certain retailers (see below with the price comparison table updated every two hours).

Of course, the Google Pixel 8a also has some drawbacks, such as its rather slow charging compared to the industry average. But the operating system, without an overlay, offers an exceptional and particularly fluid quality of service. What's more, the smartphone is fast and offers a fairly high-quality design with fairly wide borders around the screen. It should also be noted that the Google Pixel 8a will benefit from major updates for no less than seven years: that's a long time, and up to twice as good as many third-party devices.

the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus © Presse-citron.net

Let's now move on to the penultimate mobile in our comparison; the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus. This device also offers one of the best value for money on the market today, even if it is still a little more expensive than the Poco X6 Pro presented above. Here, charging is even faster with only twenty minutes needed to reach 100% charge from 0. The AMOLED screen is also very well made and the battery life has nothing to envy from the industry leaders such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The design is also quite sturdy, whereas the plastic of mid-range devices often doesn't last long against everyday abuse and falls.

Unfortunately, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus is clearly not the best in photos and the Google Pixel 8a surpasses it here, by a long way. Xiaomi's software overlay is also not very appreciable, but at least the charger is provided in the box. This isn't even the case with some of the best premium smartphones that teens like, so it's notable. Moreover, you should know that this smartphone is also supplied with its screen protector and with its protective silicone shell, which is even rarer to underline this.

Compatible with the eSIM format, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus comes with 8, 12 or 16 GB of RAM. The device also benefits from several photo sensors on the back, including a massive 200-megapixel wide-angle and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle. A 2 megapixel telephoto lens is also included, with LED flash to illuminate scenes at the end of the day or during the night. The device is also IP68 certified and therefore resists immersion much better than an Honor 200 Pro. The pixel density reaching no less than 446 ppi, an excellent figure, again, for the mid-range.

You will understand, the choice of ;#8217;a good smartphone for a child or teenager actually depends on a number of criteria. We know in particular that young people particularly enjoy films and series, so make sure you opt for a mobile with a screen of the right size. Here, the Poco X6 Pro and the Google Pixel 8a should do the trick.

Performance is also a guarantee of quality for mobile gaming aficionados, with a clear advantage again for the Poco X6 Pro here. If, on the other hand, your offspring wants to do “like everyone else” with an iPhone, then the third-generation SE model is a wise choice.

Finally, for selfies on social networks and other holiday photos, we would probably recommend the Honor 200 Pro and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus. So, which one will you choose ? Don't hesitate to share your opinion with us in the comments!
