Apple is currently preparing the iOS 17.5 update of its operating system. And according to an article from 9To5Mac, this update could include a new feature called Repair State. As a reminder, iOS 17.5 is currently being tested in beta. And it is in one of the new beta versions of this update that 9to5Mac discovered the new functionality. In essence, thanks to Repair State, it could become easier to have an iPhone repaired at Apple or one of its partners.
Currently, when you drop off an iPhone for repair, Apple asks you to turn off the Find My feature. “To prevent a third party from repairing your device without your knowledge, Apple may not be able to repair your device if Find My is not turned off”, explains the firm in a help page.
But thanks to the “Repair State” feature, users might be able to get an iPhone repaired without having to turn off the location feature. Indeed, when activating “Repair State” mode before a repair, the system would ask for an Apple ID and a password, which confirms that the person requesting a repair is indeed the owner of the iPhone.
The Repair State feature is also useful for people who have enabled the & ;nbsp;Protection in the event of theft of the device» that Apple launched this year.
Indeed, when this anti-theft protection is activated, the system imposes a security delay of one hour to deactivate Find, unless the iPhone is in a known location. If a person arrives at a repairer, and they disable Locate onsite, the repairer may have to wait an hour (the security time limit) to confirm the deactivation of this feature.
And it is possible that Apple has also developed the Repair State feature to solve this problem.
In any case, it is interesting to see that Apple continues to improve the repair experience of its products, at a time when more and more smartphone users want to keep the same device for longer. Recently, the company announced that it will be possible to repair iPhones with used parts, except when these parts come from stolen or lost iPhones.
