This won't really surprise you if you're familiar with the subject, but piracy of football matches is exploding in France if we are to believe a new study by Odoxa. To get a clearer picture, analysts were able to interview 1,005 people representative of the French population. Here's what we learned from it.

2.5 million pirates

According to this survey, 5% of French people, or around 2.5 million of our fellow citizens, use illegal means to view matches (IPTV or illegal streaming). Worse, this practice is very widely accepted socially, since 6 out of 10 French people say they understand this behavior.

Why ? The respondents estimate that you should not pay more than 23 euros per month to follow football. In reality, you will have to pay a much larger sum if you want to follow Ligue 1, foreign championships, and European cups. For example, access to Ligue 1 alone costs at least 30 euros per month on DAZN, and you will not have all the matches, because BeIN Sports also offers a match each day.

And football fans are not gentle with DAZN. 65% of them believe that the offer proposed by the sports streaming service encourages the public to turn to piracy.

Broadcasters must react

There is no doubt that the French football authorities and broadcasters will take note of these alarming figures. They are not forbidden from reacting now to propose more attractive offers adapted to the market before it is too late.

In any case, these figures are not likely to surprise us. In a recent report, Acces (Association of Thematic Channels) estimated that 5.1% of the French population regularly used illegal streaming platforms or IPTVs to access this pirated content.

Which even made Maxime Saada say during a Senate hearing: “The Canal+ group's main competitor is piracy!”. If you want to delve deeper into this topic, feel free to check out our previous article on the subject here.

What do you think of the figures from this latest survey, and do you think, like the French people surveyed, that access to football matches has become too expensive ? Tell us in the comments.

Key takeaways:

  • A survey by Odoxa indicates that 2.5 million French people resort to piracy to watch football matches
  • Respondents estimate that 23 euros per month is the maximum price to pay to watch football
  • A sum significantly lower than current offers
