285 million euros per year. This is the money that would be lost each year by Serie A due to piracy, according to Romano Righetti, legal advisor to DAZN in Italy, who handles legal and regulatory issues for the sports streaming platform at our transalpine neighbors. This concern particularly concerns illegal IPTV which is increasingly popular in the country.

Suing customers: a bad idea?

Heard by the Italian Senate, the manager notably expressed of an idea that is sure to provoke a reaction. He hopes that a memorandum of understanding between AGCOM, the Italian telecommunications regulatory authority, the Guardia di Finanza (financial police) and the public prosecutor will be signed soon. The idea of this agreement is simple:

Another very important step would be to allow the prosecution to prosecute not only those who offer piracy services, but also those who buy them.

It is therefore quite simply a matter of initiating proceedings against the general public. This would be an absolutely fundamental step against piracy, according to him. Why ? By prosecuting a large number of people, the deterrent effect would be great and customers would turn more readily to the legal offer.

200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000

Nothing is less certain, however. Especially since in surveys on the subject of piracy, Internet users often cite prices that are too high and a dispersed offer in terms of sports broadcasts.

Threats of fines

However, this is an avenue very seriously considered in Italy. As we explained to you recently, Massimiliano Capitanio, the director of AGCOM, explained on LinkedIn:

Perhaps it is not yet clear that fines from 150 to 5,000 euros will come soon, and this, like all fines, is a a step that we would like to avoid, but which has become necessary, in particular because those who do illegal business make unsuspecting users believe that they risk nothing.

To find out more about this, we invite you to read our dedicated article here. While DAZN will soon broadcast Ligue 1, you can also reread our focus on this growing platform here. In France too, the problem of illegal IPTV is being addressed more and more, and Internet users seem to have found a new way to circumvent the sanctions. What do you think of the strategy mentioned by this department manager? Tell us in the comments.

What you need to remember:

  • Illegal IPTV are a major problem in Italy
  • A DAZN executive mentions the idea of pursuing the customers of these pirate offers
  • A solution that would surely not be unanimously accepted
