When it comes to illegal IPTV, we are now largely accustomed to hearing about prosecutions and arrests of pirate network managers. However, it is completely new to learn that Internet users are sentenced to prison for simply using these services. Let's take stock.

5 months in prison

Many Greek media outlets have reported a court decision described as “historic”. A local court decided to sentence a subscriber to an IPTV offer to five months in prison. Skair.gr underlines as follows:

The judges concluded that the consequences of piracy cannot be considered “minor”, given the enormous damage it causes on several levels. According to the evidence presented at trial, pay-TV piracy causes serious economic and social consequences, such as loss of revenue for the Greek state due to the non-collection of VAT and tax revenues and the parallel circulation of black money.

A case that remains mysterious

Beyond these grounds for action, our colleagues at TorrentFreak rightly point out that this story is not very clear. For example, there is no mention of the name or age of the accused. Similarly, it is the Athens Court of Appeal that delivers this judgment, but there is no mention of when the first trial took place or what verdict was reached.

It is also unknown which parties have decided to prosecute the defendant and no rights holder in the country has commented on this information. As for the insistence on the 5 months in prison, it should also be taken with a pinch of salt.

According to the sources of our colleagues who are specialists in the Greek judicial system, it is indeed very likely that the sentence will be suspended for a period of three years and it seems unlikely that the defendant will actually go to prison. His sentence could therefore be adjusted.

The specialist site therefore seems to think that such insistence on the risks for Internet users is propaganda aimed at scaring potential users of these IPTV services.

Moreover, another persistent rumor indicates that a fine of 600 euros could soon target users of these illegal offers in Greece. The prospect of a risk of imprisonment spices things up. That said, it is not certain that this will be enough to stem the success of IPTV which is growing throughout Europe. To learn more about this file, do not hesitate to reread our previous article devoted to a fascinating study.
