Is your operator ranked among the best for fixed Internet ? The numbers

The “barometer of fixed Internet connections in mainland France” published by nPerf is back, this time focusing on the period spanning from the beginning of January 2023 to the end of last December. We discover that Bouygues Télécom is crowned as offering the best performance for fixed internet, over the period. For comparison, Free is only second in the ranking, followed by Orange. SFR is not on the podium for the past year.

To achieve these results, nPerf mentions in particular an average download speed of 332.55 Mbit per second at Bouygues Télécom, compared to 327.87 at Free, 254.96 at Orange and only… 226.45 at SFR. That's still more than 100 Mbit per second difference with the industry leader, which is clearly not negligible. Even more so when we know that the prices offered by the two access providers are generally neck and neck, without taking into account their low-cost offers (B&You and RED by SFR).

Notable differences, in detail

Despite everything, it seems that In terms of latency, Orange is apparently the one that does the best in HD and THD (very high bandwidth). The company would only offer 13.97 milliseconds of delay on average, but this figure remains very close to the second most efficient operator in this area: Bouygues Télécom. For Benoît Torloting's company, the score recorded by nPerf here reached no less than 14.03 milliseconds, i.e. only 0.06 milliseconds difference with Orange.

On the technology side, nPerf takes the opportunity to confirm that Wi-Fi 6, which is slowly starting to be implemented in a large proportion of French homes, offers speeds up to twice those of Wi-Fi 5. For comparison, Wi-Fi 7 being prepared for the French market could reach no less than 40 Gbps, four times better than Wi-Fi 6E. This standard is now available on certain MacBook Pro models and on the iPhone 15 Pro, but also on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, to name just these models.

The download speed reaches no less than 400 Mbit per second, a speed close to the scores measured precisely by nPerf. Otherwise, be aware that the SFR Fiber Starter subscription is a little faster (up to 500 Mbit per second), but is billed at an additional 2 euros per month at the start.
