Italian GP: Did McLarens overtake Red Bulls ?

Having dominated for two seasons, the Red Bull team no longer has much room for manoeuvre on its rivals this year. The last races even give the advantage to the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

What if Red Bull lost its crown? The Austrian team, crowned constructors' world champion in 2022 and 2023, has lost its shine this season. Rather dominant in the first races, with four successes obtained in the first five Grands Prix, the single-seaters called RB20 have since lost performance. A drop in performance that can be seen in the results since neither Max Verstappen nor Sergio Perez managed to bring their car to victory in the last five Grands Prix.

Since the end of June, Mercedes, three times (Austria, Great Britain, Belgium), and McLaren, twice (Hungary, Netherlands), have swept the board. While Lewis Hamilton and George Russell's team still alternates between very good and average, as last weekend at Zandvoort (8th and 7th), the “Orange” of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have definitely reached a milestone. The demonstration of the first named in the race on Verstappen's home turf – which he relegated to 22 seconds! – made an impression.

When Red Bull seems to be stagnating, McLaren is progressing every time it benefits from developments. This was the case before Miami and before the Netherlands, two races won by Norris. The British driver, who has come back to 70 points behind Vesrtappen, was pleased last Sunday that “the pace of the car was simply mind-blowing.” He even gave himself the cherry on the cake by setting the fastest lap in the race at the end of the Grand Prix. In the other camp, Verstappen seems not to understand what is happening. “I suffered all weekend and we are struggling to resolve our problems, he analyzed after climbing onto the second step of the podium. We are slow and we are also damaging the tires. It is surprising because that was our strength before. We must not panic. We just need to fix our problem.”

Red Bull's problem today has a name: McLaren. The MCL38 has become the fastest on the grid and there's a good chance it will stay that way for the rest of the season. With a 30-point lead in the constructors' championship, can Red Bull resist the McLaren comeback and claim a third consecutive world crown? First answers this weekend at Monza.
