In an email distributed to Nothing employees, then relayed by Carl Pei himself on Linkedin, the company's CEO demands that the firm's employees return to the office 5 days a week. This new policy will be effective within two months.

Carl Pei's goal is explained in his email: the idea is toimprove collaboration and innovation across design, engineering and manufacturing, “what doesn't work remotely,” he says. ” Remote work is not compatible with great ambition and high speed of execution ” he continues.

Despite this decision, Carl Pei seems well aware that it may not please everyone: ”  I know this is a controversial decision that won't please everyone, and there are many companies that are doing very well in remote or hybrid mode, but this is not optimal for our type of business, and the remote work will not help us truly reach our potential ».

Nothing denies its roots

As a reminder, the company Nothing was created in 2020 by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, while the latter is leaving his company launched in collaboration with Pete Lau. Nothing is therefore launching in the middle of a lockdown, while the covid-19 pandemic has pushed many companies to review their teleworking policies.

The firm Nothing has therefore based itself on remote work, and this decision ultimately appears quite surprising. This is certainly not a first in the high-tech sector: Amazon, Google, Roblox, Meta or Zoom have recently announced a return to similar face-to-face policies.

However, for a firm built on remote work, many employees who have shaped the company's success may not take this news well. And if, in the end, that was the intended goal ?
