A feminist activist and president of the association Les Simone Veillent, Chantal Lapuerta believes that it is urgent to act against sexual and sexist violence in rugby, whether amateur or professional.

“If one day there is a femicide, I will not be surprised.” When she talks about sexism in the world of rugby, Chantal Lapuerta doesn't mince her words. The president of the feminist association Les Simone Veillent, has just returned from Marcoussis where she presented her “Charter against violence against women in rugby” (see below) to Florian Grill, the president of the Federation. For the woman who accompanied the two wives of ASBH players who were victims of domestic violence, it is urgent to start all over again.

“Oversized ego”

“Above all, it is important to deconstruct the aura that players enjoy, we tend to glorify them, to place them on a pedestal which gives them a complete feeling of impunity”, the activist insists. An awareness that must be raised “both on the professional side and on the amateur side where it is a disaster”, she continues. “Some players have an oversized ego and have lost the fundamental values of this sport.” Like many others, she mentions drug use, particularly cocaine (see page one), which would accentuate this all-powerful phenomenon. A phenomenon that, as a resident of Béziers for 34 years and a regular at the Raoul Barrière stadium, she claims to have seen “rising crescendo”.

In reality, Chantal Lapuerta makes a direct link between sexist and sexual violence and excesses due to drinking or taking narcotics. “If we had to tackle the evil of domestic violence in rugby, we would have to work on drugs and alcohol”, she believes. The activist now speaks of “fourth or even fifth half”, to describe these post-match parties which, she believes she knows, “sometimes end up in the hotel with girls”. “We need to talk about it, find solutions, for the good of the clubs and for the good of this magnificent sport”, she concludes.
