“It's hell, people throw away their trees, you have to zigzag on the sidewalk”: in Montpellier, abandoning your tree can be expensive

Des sapins abandonnés à même le trottoir… Midi Libre – L. D.

On this first day back at school, Christmas trees littered the sidewalks, blocking passage. However, dedicated Christmas tree parks have been set up. And this is an offense punishable by a fine.

The Christmas holidays are well and truly over. The proof this Monday morning: many Christmas trees littered the sidewalks in certain neighborhoods of Montpellier.

“It's hellish and scandalous, people throw their Christmas trees downstairs, you have to zigzag to get to school”,grumbles this mother who even caught her vest on a branch in passing. Behind her, a father with a stroller is forced to get out onto the road, narrowly avoiding a car.

Right on Boulevard Berthelot, at least four trees have been abandoned. “Not to mention the fact that there are some around the bus stop, young people have a hard time making their way out”, an elderly person fumes, while going shopping.

But beyond what may seem like incivility, getting rid of your tree in front of your door is especially forbidden by law.

A fine of up to 135 euros

These unscrupulous people – who probably waited until nightfall on the eve of the start of the school year to discreetly dispose of their tree, wrapped or not, on the public highway – risk a fine of 135 euros, according to article R644-2 of the Penal Code. Because this act is considered as “illegal dumping of garbage” is an offense.

Especially since a system is set up to avoid this kind of inconvenience and especially to facilitate this post-holiday discharge.

Recycling at the recycling center and in the 74 tree parks

The Montpellier Metropolis has set up, as it does every year, a tree park service to get rid of your cut tree after the holidays.

Some 74 tree parks (31 in Montpellier, 43 in the other municipalities of the metropolis) are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to facilitate collection and until January 22.

More than 25,000 trees were collected in all the parks last year.

Another possibility with a bonus: drop off the tree at one of the 20 recycling centers in the Métropole. In this case, it will be possible to leave with 50 liters of free biowaste compost.
