It’s time to move on (and ditch the USB-A port)

While smartphones have largely adopted the USB-C port for charging and data transfer, some computers still use the old USB-A port. But 2024 could mark the beginning of the end for this 28-year-old technology. Indeed, Apple, the company that killed the headphone jack on smartphones, could launch its first Mac mini with only USB-C ports, and no USB-A. On September 9, the company will unveil its new iPhones. But according to rumors, it is preparing another presentation before the end of the year to lift the veil on new Macs, including this famous Mac mini which would push USB-A a little further towards the release.

For the moment, this information should be treated with caution, since it does not come from an official source. But in any case, it would be logical for Apple to equip its new Mac mini only with USB-C ports, if it wants to have a more compact design. Besides, we are in 2024. USB-C technology is no longer a novelty and although USB-A is not dead, many manufacturers of smartphones and electronic devices already ship their products with cables with USB-C technology on both ends. This is the case, for example, with the iPhone 15.

Is it finally time to say goodbye to USB-A ?

In any case, the rumor about the next Mac mini has rekindled the debate about the ports that are included on computers. Indeed, many people simply don’t understand why computer manufacturers continue to offer USB-A ports when superior technology is already available. Others complain that USB-A is still the default smartphone charging port on planes, buses, etc.

In addition to the technical improvements (charging speed and data transfer speed) that have been made to USB-C technology, it is significantly more practical. The port is more compact and reversible. This means that the user does not have to worry about the orientation when connecting a cable to a computer or a charger case. In addition, with 100% USB-C cables, you can connect either end to your PC, whereas on older cables, there is a USB-A end for the PC and a USB-C or Micro USB end for the smartphone or accessory to be connected.

There is only one thing that really justifies that in 2024 we will still see USB-A ports: consumers still have many accessories and cables at home that use this old connector. Mandating USB-C would force these people to buy adapters or new cables.

Will Apple make another brave decision ?

In 2016, when Apple launched its first iPhones without headphone jacks, it considered itself to have made a brave decision. “The courage to step forward and do something new that’s better for all of us,” said Phil Schiller, who is now the company’s head of the App Store and events. At first, Apple was heavily criticized and mocked by its competitors. But eventually, after the release of these iPhones, smartphones without headphone jacks gradually became the norm.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will make another bold move for the USB-A port, launching its first-ever Mac mini with only USB-C ports. In any case, this time, the company may have more support. On X, for example, one user responded to the rumor by saying that he has to use a hub with his Mac mini because the computer doesn’t have enough USB-C ports.
