In his film Jack Mimoun and the Secrets of Val Verde, Malik Bentalha pays homage to the cinema of the 80s, with a multitude of references that the public can enjoy to spot.

Released in theaters on October 12, 2022, Jack Mimoun and the Secrets of Val Verde is the directorial debut of comedian Malik Bentalha, known for his stand-up shows but also his film roles (Taxi 5, Pattaya, Robin Hood, Sonic 1 and 2). He co-directs this adventure feature film the comic sauce with Ludovic Colbeau-Justin à to whom we owe in particular The Lionwith Dany Boon and Philippe Katerine. Together, the two directors want to pay tribute to the adventure film genre of the 80s.

At BFM TV, Malik Benthala does not lack measure: “there are 150 references in Jack Mimoun". Indeed, among the winks that can be noticed in the feature film, let us cite those to  Indiana Jones, The Hunt for the Green Diamond Jumanji, Jurassic Park, The Man from Rio,  or even The Goonies. He also specifies that the name of the island of Val Verde is "a reference to the American screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who created this fictional universe that can be found in many films such as Commando, Predator or 58 minutes to live", while the hero's first name, Jack, is a nod to the protagonist played by Kurt Russell in The Adventures of Jack Burton in the Claws of the Mandarin. 

In an interview for NRJ, the director-actor explains that Jack Mimounis "a childhood dream" but not only that, it is also a tribute to the films of his childhood. "It is a declaration of love for these films. I pay tribute to them, I do not parody them unlike many genre films that are sometimes made in France." "I had this idea in mind since I was little. For me, cinema is adventure, it is travel. It's the popcorn cinema of the 80s. It's Spielberg.”

However, it's a cinematographic genre that we don't dare experiment with in France because it's expensive, as Malik Bentalha explains on BFM: “We tend to abandon it for budgetary reasons because we tell ourselves that we'll never be able to match the American blockbusters. I was lucky to come across producers crazy enough to take the gamble!”

Synopsis– It was by escaping alone from the island of Val Verde that the adventurer Jack Mimoun became a hero. Two years later, he is the author of a bestseller and has his own television show. Until the day when Aurelie Diaz, a fan of the character, contacts him to help him find a treasure. Indeed, the latter wants to go to the island of Val Verde to the search for the legendary sword of the pirate La Buse. And faced with the danger she must face, she chooses Jack as the bravest adventurer she could think of. To accompany them, a shock team with Bruno Quézac, the manager and the mercenary Jean-Marc Bastos…
