Former US President Jimmy Carter died Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Georgia, his son announced Sunday. He had been in end-of-life protocol at home since February 2023.

At 100, Jimmy Carter broke the longevity records for US presidents.

Withdrawn from all public life, the Democrat, 39th President of the United States, had only served one term (1977-1981), marked by the Camp David Accords in 1978 between Egypt and Israel.

Jimmy Carter entered the White House in January 1977 after winning the presidential election against Gerald Ford before losing to Republican Ronald Reagan four years later.

“My father was a hero”

In 1980, after the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet troops, he decided to boycott the Moscow Olympic Games.

His years presidency were marked by an economic recession, persistent unpopularity, and an Iran hostage crisis that would prevent him from running for a second term.

Founder in 1982 of the Carter Center, whose stated goal is the peaceful resolution of conflicts, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his “tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote social and economic development”.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to all who believed in war, human rights, and selfless love”, said his son Chip Carter.
