Prime Minister Justin Trudeau persists and signs: he will not give up his position at the head of the Liberal Party of Canada, despite the unfavorable polls he has been facing for months and the calls for his resignation which have emerged within his caucus itself in the last days.
“It’s clear that within the Liberal caucus, there are a lot of different perspectives,” Trudeau acknowledged Wednesday during a news conference held at a community facility in Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension.
Last week, Trudeau’s party was dealt another blow when the Conservatives won a byelection in the riding of Toronto—St. Paul’s, which had been a Liberal stronghold for more than 30 years.
This defeat was “difficult,” Mr. Trudeau said on Wednesday. However, he refused to commit to holding an urgent meeting of the Liberal caucus to discuss his political future, as requested by several elected officials from the party in recent days. Some elected officials, as well as former minister Catherine McKenna, simply asked for the resignation of Mr. Trudeau.
“We lost last week an important constituency, but we are keeping the focus on the issues that concern Canadians,” added the Prime Minister.
