Vice President Kamala Harris rushed to rally Democratic delegates to her campaign for the White House, following the withdrawal of President Joe Biden.

The departure of Biden's announcement on Sunday, driven by Democrats' concerns about his fitness for office, was a seismic shift in the presidential race that upended the two major political parties' carefully laid plans for the 2024 race .

In an effort to put behind them weeks of intraparty drama surrounding Mr. Biden's candidacy, prominent Democratic elected officials, party leaders and organizations Politicians quickly lined up behind Ms. Harris in the hours after Mr. Biden announced he was abandoning his re-election campaign.

Mr. Biden's departure allows his delegates to vote for whoever they want. Ms. Harris, whom Mr. Biden supported after ending his candidacy, is the only declared candidate so far and was scrambling to quickly win the support of a majority of delegates.

It's just the first item on a staggering political to-do list for her following Mr. Biden's decision to leave the race, which she learned during a call Sunday morning with the president. If she can secure the nomination, she must also choose a vice presidential nominee and launch a massive political operation to bolster her candidacy over Mr. Biden's with just over 100 days until Election Day.

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Biden's campaign officially changed its name to “Harris for President,” reflecting its inheriting of his political operation of more than 1,000 staffers and a war chest that was growing to nearly $96 million by the end of June.

Ms. Harris spent much of Sunday surrounded by her family and staff, making more than 100 calls to Democratic officials to ensure their support for his candidacy, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the effort. It comes as she attempts to move her party beyond the painful public feuds that have defined the weeks since Mr. Biden's disastrous June 27 debate with Mr. Trump.

Speaking to party leaders, Ms. Harris expressed gratitude for Mr. Biden's support, but insisted that she was seeking to win the nomination in her own right, the person briefed on the matter said.

In a sign that the Democratic Party was about to unite behind her, Ms. Harris quickly won the support of leaders of several caucuses and influential political organizations. These include the AAPI Victory Fund, which focuses on Asian American and Pacific Islander voters, the Collective PAC, focused on building black political power, and the Latino Victory Fund. She also had the support of the chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the entire Congressional Black Caucus. Ms. Harris, if elected, would be the first woman and first person of South Asian descent to serve as president.

A handful of politicians who have already been mentioned as potential running mates for Ms. Harris — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly — also quickly issued statements. supporting. Aides to Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Cooper confirmed that Ms. Harris spoke to them on Sunday afternoon. During his brief call with Mr. Cooper, the North Carolina governor told Ms. Harris that he supported her to be the Democratic nominee, according to Mr. Cooper's spokeswoman, Sadie Weiner.

However, former President Barack Obama was hesitant to provide immediate support as some in the party expressed concern that the quick move to Ms. Harris could feel like a coronation, instead pledging support for the party's eventual nominee .

Meanwhile, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who left the party earlier this year to become an independent, is considering re-registering as as a Democrat to run for the nomination against the vice president, according to Jonathan Kott, a longtime adviser to Mr. Manchin.

A first appearance on Monday

Ms. Harris was scheduled to make her first public appearance Monday morning at the White House, where she is scheduled to speak at an event honoring the National Collegiate Athletic Association's champion teams. She replaces Mr. Biden, who is recovering after contracting COVID-19 last week.

In a statement, she praised the “selfless and patriotic act” of Mr. Biden in deciding to leave the race and said she intended to “deserve and win” her party’s nomination.

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” she said.

Mr. Biden planned to discuss his decision to step down later this week in a speech to the nation. He wrote in a letter published Sunday on the social network president for the remainder of my term. »

Nearly 30 minutes after announcing he was abandoning his campaign, Mr. Biden threw his support behind Ms. Harris.

“Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement to Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year,” he said in another post on X. “Democrats, it’s time to unite and beat Trump. »

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to be held August 19-22 in Chicago, but the party had announced it would hold a virtual call to officially nominate Mr. Biden before the start of in-person proceedings. The convention rules committee is scheduled to meet this week to finalize its nomination process and it is unclear how it will be adjusted to reflect Mr. Biden's departure.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragan, who stressed that she was “all in” behind the vice president, said she spoke Sunday with Harris, who told her she preferred forgoing a virtual roll call for the nomination process and replacing it with a process following the usual order.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement that the party would “undertake a transparent and orderly process” to select “a candidate capable of defeating Donald Trump in November.”
