Mothers gathered this Thursday morning in front of the entrance to the Boulanger school. Midi Libre – G. T.

Access to the Lily-Boulanger nursery school, in the Paul-Valéry district of Montpellier, was blocked this Thursday morning by around forty parents of pupils. An action launched to denounce the insufficient number of childminders in the classes as well as heating problems inside the canteen.

Access to the Lily-Boulanger nursery school in the Pas du Loup school group was blocked this Thursday morning by around forty parents, mainly mothers, who were unhappy with the conditions in which their children were welcomed at the school.

This blockade generated some tension with some parents who had to leave with their little ones and an incident was noted, involving a distraught mother who pulled out a knife. These tensions led to the intervention of the municipal police.

Additional heaters delivered

Basically, the parent delegates behind this action denounce the lack of childminders in the school. “We have four Atsem for 162 students, two maintenance workers for 22 classes. This school has been abandoned” says Sandrine, whose four children are educated here. Additional staff have been assigned since Tuesday “but we want a lasting solution because today we are being asked to leave our children in an unsafe environment” continues the delegate.

At the beginning of the week, parents had already raised the alarm about the heating problem in the canteen. “It was 10 degrees. The children were eating with gloves and anoraks. We intervened to have four additional heaters brought” reports Cécile Jourdan, the secretary of the FO union present on site this Thursday. Sandrine and other parents claim to have alerted the city about the deteriorating situation at the school since September. “But we didn't get any response.”
