This 65-year-old man was arrested at the end of November at the Gunja border crossing, which separates Bosnia from Croatia, during a routine check, police told AFP.

Puzzled by the passenger's lack of consciousness and movement, Croatian police called a doctor who said the 83-year-old woman, also Austrian according to her identity papers, was dead.

Who was a woman ?

The woman – whose relationship with the suspect is unknown – died in Bosnia, and he wanted to repatriate her body to Austria to avoid the formalities associated with a “transport of corpse” , police said.

According to Croatian press reports, the man was her legal guardian. After her death was pronounced, her body was taken care of by funeral transport services.
