Tesla is going through a difficult time. New models equipped with the latest generation of HW4 self-driving chips are experiencing serial failures. Owners find themselves without crucial features such as cameras, GPS and active safety systems. But what is going on ?
The testimonies are piling up and paint a worrying picture. Many owners report complete failures of the on-board computer after only a few hundred kilometers. In some cases, the malfunctions occur even before reaching the first 100 kilometers. These failures are not limited to disabling the Autopilot or the Full Self-Driving system. As seen previously, they also impact other essential equipment.
The origin of the problem seems to be linked to the latest generation of HW4 self-driving chips. Internal sources mention short circuits potentially caused by the battery integrated into the on-board computer. This situation exclusively affects Tesla vehicles assembled in recent months and equipped with this new technology. The manufacturer is facing a growing number of complaints, but has still not officially communicated on this subject.
Anonymous sources within the company say that service centers have been instructed to minimize safety concerns. The goal would be to prevent customers from viewing their new vehicles as potentially dangerous. This communication strategy is part of an already controversial history of the company concerning the transparency of its incidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) imposes strict standards concerning rearview cameras. The malfunctions reported should theoretically trigger a recall procedure. For the moment, Tesla has not yet notified the federal agency of these technical problems.
The resolution of this technical crisis promises to be particularly complex. While a software update could theoretically resolve the problem, internal discussions suggest that only a complete replacement of the on-board computer would resolve the situation once and for all. This radical solution would entail significant costs for Tesla and considerable waiting times for owners.
Tesla service centers, already overloaded, are struggling to meet demand. Some owners report waiting times of several months to obtain the necessary replacement parts.
This situation represents a new setback for Tesla, particularly damaging given that Elon Musk had presented the HW4 chip as a major step towards fully autonomous driving. The manufacturer will have to quickly provide a sustainable solution to maintain the trust of its customers and meet its regulatory obligations.
