This agreement “will protect Israel from the threat posed by Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations operating from Lebanon,” the two heads of state assured. “It will create the conditions necessary for the restoration of lasting calm and allow the safe return to their homes of residents on both sides of the Blue Line,” the UN demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, they said.

The United States and France, which have been working for weeks on this truce, “are committed to playing a leading role in supporting international efforts to strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces and promote economic development throughout Lebanon in order to promote stability and prosperity in the region,” the two heads of state added.

Israel approved a ceasefire in its war in Lebanon with Hezbollah on Tuesday evening, after more than a year of cross-border hostilities and two months of open warfare between the Israeli army and the powerful Lebanese armed group, supported by Tehran.
