Les Marronniers: “The neighborhood at 30 km/h, the ring road at 50 and the crossing of Nîmes at 110”

Spread the love

At the bus stop, rue des Quatrefages, bulky waste is piling up.

One of the wishes expressed by the neighborhood committee team during a field visit.

This is the last field visit of the year to have taken place in the Marronniers neighborhood, in this month of December, in the presence of Emmanuel Carrière, president of the Costières neighborhood council, representatives of the City services, the Agglo, the municipal police, and members of the committee. “Only a few streets were targeted, the others will be during the spring visit”,specifies Marie Ozil, the president. The opportunity to take stock, before the general meeting of March 13, on many files while a visit to the Bois des Noyers and the Georges-Besse park is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

Roads to be reviewed and excessive speed

This is not new: some arteries have roads in poor condition. The committee has therefore renewed requests for repairs concerning the rue de l'Ancien-Vélodrome, damaged by construction equipment for a residence, but also the rue des Marronniers, Printemps, Emile-Allier and Quatrefages. Concerning the latter, “only in the part where the slope of the road causes flooding in the garages of two residences, knowing that this street will be redeveloped with the work on the Jacques-Chirac urban park”. Another complaint, “accessibility issues for people with reduced mobility and in wheelchairs, as well as difficulties for people with strollers”. Also singled out was “excessive speed despite the 30 km/h zone, with the streets of San Lucar, du Forez and d'Andalousie remaining at 50 km/h.” And President Marie Ozil insisted: “The district at 30 km/h, the ring road at 50 km/h and the motorway crossing Nîmes at 110 km/h, that's all! Obvious solutions for the environment and for safety.”

Focus on Rue des Quatrefages

Rue des Quatrefages was particularly examined during this field visit. On the Parmentier impasse side, in Jacques-Chirac Park, “squatting, bulky items, rubbish, mattresses… have been reported for months by residents, the trustee and the committee. We are still waiting for the promised clean-up. Remember that local residents put out a fire this summer. This space is the property of the City and, as such, it must ensure its cleaning and surveillance. Especially since the start of the work seems to have been pushed back again”, deplores Marie Ozil. At the bus stop, there are “overflowing containers, ripped open bags, bulky items… Rats have been reported to us. This is a place where not a week goes by without incivility being noted and reported to the City, Agglo and municipal police services. Local residents are exasperated and tell us that they have witnessed some trafficking.” Incivilities that have been made aware of: the municipal police regularly pass through this area; Nîmes Métropole checks the containers of the bags while being in contact with a social landlord. “The difficulty is to catch the offenders red-handed.”
At the end of Rue des Quatrefages, at the tip of the Triangle de la Gare, the construction site gates of the last free space have once again been torn down. “We have just learned that the construction project is suspended due to the current real estate crisis. We would like to have confirmation from the City.” As for the former squat on Arch 116 of the SNCF line, since 2022, “it's a real stench. We have contacted the elected officials and the mayor's office, who intervened with the SNCF, which is turning a deaf ear. It's scandalous.”

Satisfaction to be highlighted

During this visit, the committee team delivered several satisfecits: the concrete block at the top of Rue Tour-de-l'Évêque (finally) developed, two picnic tables installed in the Pierre-Gamel garden, the arrival of lighting in the parking lot on rue Sainte-Geneviève, the upgrading of the corners of rue Marronniers-Sainte Félicité and rue Frères-Durand. And the president concluded: “Our combined efforts, elected officials, services, committee, residents, will go in the right direction for living well together in a peaceful and pleasant environment.”
