Until now, these high-level competitions, equivalent to the Grand Slams in tennis, had only been organized in three countries: Singapore, Saudi Arabia and China, the dominant table tennis nation.
By choosing Sweden to host this tournament, the WTT, manager of the world circuit, wants to highlight Europe, particularly after the recent performances of European table tennis players.
At the Paris Olympic Games, in singles, the Swede Truls Moregard won the silver medal, while the Frenchman Félix Lebrun won the bronze, behind the Chinese Olympic champion Fan Zhendong.
“Sweden is synonymous with greatness in table tennis, and hosting the European Smash in Malmö is a tribute to legends past and rising stars today,”, WTT CEO Steve Dainton said in a statement.
The only European player to have been crowned Olympic champion is Swedish: Jan-Ove Waldner, who won the gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona, defeating Frenchman Jean-Philippe Gatien in the final. The three other Grand Smashes of the 2025 season are scheduled for Singapore (January 30 – February 9), Las Vegas (July 3 – 13) and Beijing (September 25 – October 5).
