If someone visits you and says they come from Enedis, be careful. This Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the manager of the French electricity network sounded the alarm. In fact, the company was informed that individuals were appropriating its name and identity in order to intervene with users for fraudulent purposes.

As Enedis explains in its press release, scammers offer to make dangerous and illegal modifications to customers' electrical panels. This distorts their electricity consumption, which is generally revised downwards. Enedis calls on its 37.5 million customers to be extremely vigilant.

Enedis goes on the hunt for fraudsters

Last December, two men were already sentenced for “organized gang fraud”. The latter installed a diversion system in order to artificially reduce the electricity consumption recorded by the Linky meter against the modest sum of 1000 to 2500 euros. Enough to reduce consumption by 75%, and therefore savings. The business provider received a one-year suspended prison sentence and was ordered to reimburse Enedis. The technician was sentenced to two years in prison, one of which was suspended on probation, the obligation to reimburse the electricity network manager, a fine of 10,000 euros and a ban on managing a business for 15 years and the confiscation of numerous valuable objects.

After this recent conviction, Enedis continues its hunt for fraudsters. The manager of the French electricity network recalls that it does not achieve “no commercial canvassing and does not sell any product to the service which would alter the integrity of its customers' electrical panel in order to partially or totally reduce the amount to pay for the electricity they have consumed”.

This fraudulent practice seems to be spreading more and more in France, due to the skyrocketing price of electricity. Enedis specifies that non-compliant intervention on your panel or your electricity meter is dangerous. Indeed, there are serious risks for your safety, potentially causing fires or electrocutions. The group takes the opportunity to point out that energy theft is punishable by heavy criminal penalties. We are still talking about a fine of up to 1 million euros and 10 years of imprisonment.

Since its appearance, the Linky meter has created discord in France. His opponents accuse him of many evils, including monitoring consumers and increasing their bills. Recently, Enedis announced that it wanted to limit the power of certain Linky meters for experimental purposes. Its goal? To avoid total power cuts in the event of saturation of the French electricity network.
