Linky meter: how much will you have to pay if its installation is refused ?

The Linky meter continues to be a point of contention for the French. Although it has been mandatory since January 1, 2023, many consumers are firmly opposed to it, and accuse it of all evils.

While Enedis does not hesitate to list the advantages of the Linky meter, allowing consumption data to be automatically transmitted without a technician having to come to your home and to monitor its consumption in (almost) real time, detractors are not budging. According to them, the Linky meter would be a simple way for Enedis to inflate electricity bills, spy on them or even harm their health by emitting waves deemed harmful and dangerous.

Several French people still refuse to have a Linky meter installed in their homes, even though it is now mandatory. But starting next year, this refusal will not be painless. Indeed, Enedis has warned an opponent from Toulouse that he will be billed for meter reading fees from mid-2025.

A “fine” of €64 per year

Although the Linky meter has been mandatory since last year, Enedis accepts that customers who do not yet have one transmit their consumption data themselves at least once a year. But starting next year, they will be billed. Unless, of course, installing the Linky meter in their home is impossible due to technical constraints.

The meter reading fees applied to consumers who still have an old-generation meter in mid-2025 will amount to 10.66 euros excluding tax for both. At the end of the year, this represents 64 euros excluding tax. Even if you regularly send your consumption. Ouch… The only way to avoid it? Give in, and (finally) install a Linky meter at home.

This is a hard blow for the detractors of the Linky meter. These meter reading fees are obviously set up to push the recalcitrant to crack for the Linky meter, willingly , unwillingly. If this decision should make consumers roar with anger, let us emphasize that it is still supported by the Energy Regulatory Commission. The idea that everyone ends up adopting the famous Linky meter.< /p>

After receiving this bad news from the French electricity network manager by mail, a customer told France 3 Occitaniewant to contact a lawyer and associations such as UFC-Que Choisir and 60 Million Consumers, as well as friends who are MPs. It remains to be seen whether he will win his case by then…

  • From mid-2025, consumers who have not yet installed a Linky meter at home will be billed
  • Even if they regularly send their consumption
  • The amount of these meter reading fees will be €64 excluding tax per year
