Man shot dead during police intervention in Winnipeg

A 19-year-old man was shot dead during a police intervention in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon.

In a press release issued Monday, the Winnipeg Police Service Winnipeg says police responded to an apartment on University Crescent shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call about a man behaving erratically.

According to Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth, the man was armed when officers arrived and had at least one interaction with police in the past.

During the intervention, a police officer shot the man, who was then transported to the police station. hospital in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries. At a press conference, however, Chief Smyth indicated that he did not know whether the man had attacked the police officers.

When the police intervened, the man was in the company of two people, who are now considered as witnesses. One of them was at the origin of the call to the police.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the Investigative Unit (IIU) has been informed of the situation and an investigation has been opened.

As soon as&# x27;there is a death, [the investigation] is no longer our responsibility, clarified Danny Smyth.
