The Lozère Chamber of Trades and Crafts presented the prizes for the Savoir-faire et patrimoine competition this Friday, December 6, 2024, in Mende.

This Friday, December 6, 2024, it was in the chapel of the Chaptal high school in Mende, a fine example of restoration, that the Lozère Chamber of Trades and Crafts presented the prizes for the 16th Savoir-faire et patrimoine competition.

Its objective is “to affirm the know-how of local craft businesses through the presentation of renovation-restoration projects on old buildings characteristic of the department“, presents the chamber of trades.

Thirty-two projects were presented by seventeen Lozère companies, in twelve categories. The ceremony was accompanied by an exhibition of the competing projects, presenting each winning project, its particularities, the techniques deployed by the company.

A traveling exhibition

This exhibition will then be dedicated to traveling, in tourist offices, municipal halls or other structures that request it from the chamber of trades. Each painting is accompanied by a QR Code that links to a more detailed sheet.

Browsing these panels and discovering the construction sites in the running is an opportunity to visit the Lozère heritage. Each geological terroir has its own specificities, which require particular techniques and know-how.

“Quest for excellence”

This is what the elected officials, MP, senator, president of the departmental council and mayor, as well as the prefect wanted to emphasize in their speeches. Gilles Quénéhervé, while he has been discovering the landscapes of Lozère for two weeks, appreciated seeing “how [craftsmen transform] natural materials, stone, wood, […] in a quest for permanent excellence“.

While they apply and transmit ancient know-how, they also know how to adapt it to technical and regulatory developments, and to customer expectations, the speakers appreciated.

Crossing time

The president of the Lozère Chamber of Trades and Crafts, Florence Vignal, stated: “Crafts contribute to the preservation of our heritage […]. It contributes to the attractiveness of the region.” Whether they are masons, roofers, joiners or carpenters, their know-how is essential to the preservation of the characteristic buildings of Aubrac, the Cévennes, the Margeride or the Causses.

The awards were thus given to barn or farm restorations, the repair of slate or limestone roofs, such as that of a buron, a village fountain or even roofing work on churches.
