If YouTube is available for free, it is because Google monetizes its platform (and pays creators) through advertising. And recently, the Mountain View firm has increased its efforts to counter ad blockers, in order to force users to see its ads, or to pay a premium subscription that allows them to have an ad-free experience. The firm already has a very clear policy regarding ad blockers. “When you block ads on YouTube, you’re violating YouTube’s Terms of Service. If you use ad blockers, we’ll ask you to allow ads on YouTube or subscribe to YouTube Premium. If you continue to use ad blockers, we may block your video from playing,”, a Google support page states.
And apparently, YouTube has recently taken new measures against the use of ad blockers. Indeed, according to an article from Android Authority, YouTube users with ad blockers have reported on Reddit that they were forced to watch a few seconds of black screen on the platform, before the video starts. The theory is that, to counter ad-blocking extensions, Google injects its ads directly into videos. And to hide the ads, ad blockers would therefore have no choice but to hide these unskippable ads.

However, YouTube recently released a note stating that it is strengthening “extension security on YouTube.” “To better protect our users and their data, we are strengthening our security standards for browser extensions on YouTube. By strengthening enforcement of these extensions, we will help protect viewers and creators from cyberattacks such as data hijacking or theft,” the note reads.
In any case, all this shows Google's determination to crack down on ad blockers on YouTube, which is one of its main sources of revenue. Otherwise, it is also worth noting that more and more users of the platform are opting for the premium version, which allows them to no longer see ads, and to access many additional features. In February, YouTube announced that its YouTube Premium subscription had exceeded 100 million users.
