Mazan rape trial: “Dominique Pelicot will not appeal”, announces his lawyer Béatrice Zavarro

Béatrice Zavarro, Dominique Pelicot's lawyer, was invited on France info this Monday, December 30, 2024. She announced that her client would not appeal.

The public prosecutor requested the maximum sentence, 20 years of criminal imprisonment, against Dominique Pelicot, 71, for his “abject actions”, while he drugged, raped and had his wife raped by dozens of men recruited on the internet for a decade.

This Monday, December 30, 2024, his lawyer Béatrice Zavarro, announced on France info that Dominique Pelicot will not appeal the verdict against him and that he has “accepted the judges' decision”.

“The page must be turned”

“He does not want to subject his wife to a new ordeal. (…) He believes that it would be a new ordeal and new confrontations for his wife, whom he has always indicated in the debates that she was not his adversary, that she had never been his adversary (…) He considers that the page must be turned judicially and that the chapter is closed”, commented Béatrice Zavarro on public service radio.

Dominique Pelicot “will not appear before the Assize Court of Appeal, unless the prosecution general decided to introduce a general appeal”.

New trial

A new trial will however take place before a court of assizes composed of a popular jury: at least 17 of the 50 co-accused have already appealed the verdict pronounced by the criminal court of Avignon in the trial of the Mazan rapes. The 51 accused have until this Monday evening, midnight, to appeal.
