In a survey by Odoxa – Mascaret for Public Sénat and 20 regional daily press titles, the polling institute reveals the personalities of the year 2024 as well as the events that have marked the French. Among the personalities who have marked the French, it is Gisèle Pelicot who takes first place in the survey.

After being named among the 100 women of the year by the British public broadcaster the BBC and having made the cover of Vogue magazine in Germany, Gisèle Pelicot is, according to the French, the most notable personality of the year 2024 according to an Odoxa – Mascaret survey for Public Sénat and 20 regional daily press titles.

She thus collected 38% of the responses, finding herself on the podium ahead of the American president-elect Donald Trump (37%) and Volodymyr Zelensky (28%), winner of 2022. Next come Vladimir Putin (15%), Emmanuel Macron (14%), Elon Musk (14%), Benyamin Netanyahu (10%), Joe Biden (6%) and finally Ursula Von der Leyen (3%).

More striking among women

While respondents could choose two personalities, hence the percentage above 100, Gisèle Pelicot's personality had an even greater impact on women. 46% of them cite her as the personality of the year, compared to 30% of men, but also among those over 65 with 45%, or 14 points more than among young people.

“The personality of this woman, her dignity, but also the horror of what she suffered have touched the French”, writes the polling institute. Although she is the first notable personality of the year for the French, the Mazan rape trial is only the 5th most significant event for the French with 17%.

Finally, it is the censorship and political crisis in France after the dissolution, the legislative elections and the governmental instability that was the most significant event for the French at 34%, ahead of the debt and inflation (32%) and the Paris 2024 Olympics (23%). However, Emmanuel Macron, responsible for the dissolution is far behind Gisèle Pelicot, “a bit as if the French did not see him or no longer saw him as an actor likely to be able to really influence this situation”, according to the words of the polling institute.
