MHB: the club does not want to keep him, Stas Skube will leave Montpellier at the end of the season

En trois saisons, Stas Skube aura marqué son passage à Montpellier. Midi Libre – SYLVIE CAMBON

MHB has not offered a contract extension to its brilliant centre-half Stas Skube, who will leave Montpellier at the end of his contract in June.

It is an increasingly unusual team that Érick Mathé will coach next season. Very different from the one he joined a few months ago when he took over from Patrice Canayer. After Karl Konan (defender), Veron Nacinovic (pivot) and Ahmed Hesham (left-back), a new player will leave MHB at the end of the season.

According to our information, the Montpellier club did not wish to extend the contract of one of its centre-halves, Stas Skube (35 years old, 1.76 m), currently injured following a rupture of the cruciate ligament in one knee before the start of this season. Acting, in fact, his departure next June at the end of his contract.

One of the very best in his position, winner of the Champions League with Vardar Skopje (2019), the Slovenian will have only displayed his talent for three seasons at Montpellier.“He is a true connoisseur, a true handball genius, described his captain Valentin Porte last season. He knows the game perfectly, he is a center half like we don't see many of these days.”

Hit by injuries

But as great as he is, MHB has not won a title while he was their No. 1 playmaker. Closer to the end than the beginning of his career, Skube has also not been spared from injuries since his arrival.

First by being unlucky last season, seriously injuring his knee for the first time after being hit on the back by a Veszprém player. Then again this season, with another knee injury during training at the end of August.

His replacement announced Tuesday by the club

According to our information, the MHB preferred to secure the deal by acquiring the services of a new centre-half whose identity it will reveal this Tuesday at a press conference. The third arrival after the signing of Melsungen's Brazilian pivot, Rogerio Moraes (30 years old, 2.04 m) and Zagreb's left-back, Zvonimir Srna (26 years old, 2.02 m).

By also parting ways with the highest earner in its squad, the club wanted to bring some serenity to the centre-half position, as Diego Simonet is approaching the end of his last contract (2026) and Kyllian Villeminot must also recover from a new serious Achilles tendon injury.

Skube wanted to extend

Having just started treadmill running again a few years ago, days, Stas Skube, himself, had not hidden his desire to stay at MHB, his family feeling very comfortable in Hérault. But his club decided otherwise, preferring to deprive itself of one of the best players in the position that it saw wearing its jersey.

His return, planned for next March, will not be too much, to help Montpellier prevent Nantes and Paris from sharing the cake, alone. And why not offer themselves one last title. As a farewell gift.
