There was no doubt about it, but it is now official. The 23-year-old Franco-Ivorian defender, Bamo Meïté, has been loaned by Olympique de Marseille to Montpellier HSC until the end of the season, the Hérault club made official on Monday evening, two hours before the end of the winter transfer window.

During negotiations on Monday morning, the leaders of the two clubs agreed on a free loan with a purchase option, the amount of which will have been set at €8 million. At La Paillade, Meïté will wear the number 2.

In search of playing time

Having arrived from Lorient in the summer of 2023, Meïté had played under Jean-Louis Gasset in Marseille. An ankle injury had cut him off in his tracks before the new coach, the Italian Roberto De Zerbi, never really gave him a chance. This season, Meïté has played 24 minutes in three matches and has not appeared in an official match since mid-September.

Montpellier, in search of a defender since Nikola Maksimovic's injury in early January in Lyon, had quickly targeted the former Lorient player. “If we have to take someone, we'll hire a stopper who can play right back”, president Laurent Nicollin told Midi Libre on January 9. “Meïté, who we contacted, has that profile, but OM wants to sell him. You never know what can happen at the end of the transfer window”, added the Montpellier boss. Who ended up winning the case on the very last day of the market.
