IN BRIEF

  • Since Michael Schumacher's accident in 2013, his family has maintained a total silence about his condition, which irritates his former manager Willi Weber.
  • In December 2024, a trial for attempted extortion against the Schumacher family began, involving three men accused of blackmailing with sensitive images of the driver.
  • Protecting the life Schumacher's private life remains a priority for his family, despite speculation and media pressure.

Since his accident in 2013, the Schumacher family has created a total blackout around the physical and mental condition of the former Formula 1 world champion. This absolute silence deeply annoys Willi Weber, the former historic manager of the German driver.

A trial for attempted extortion

The mystery surrounding the health of Michael Schumacher unfortunately arouses covetousness. In mid-December 2024, a trial for “alleged attempted extortion” targeting the family of the seven-time world champion opened near Düsseldorf. Three men are accused of trying to extort 15 million euros from the Schumacher family.

At the heart of this sordid affair, two hard drives containing images and videos of the pilot in his hospital bed. The main accused allegedly threatened to publish these sensitive documents, as well as health reports, if his financial demands were not met. The verdict will be delivered in spring 2025.

A fiercely protected private life

Faced with these threats and incessant speculation, the Schumacher family has chosen to remain silent. A position taken by Felix Damm, the lawyer who has been advising the clan for 15 years: “The protection of privacy must apply to my client“. He explains that revealing information about Schumacher's health would only further fuel media pressure.

Sensational articles, even suggesting the driver's death, have already been heavily punished. In 2017, the weekly “Die Aktuelle” was fined 100,000 euros for having headlined “He is no longer with us” on its front page. Michael Schumacher's private life will therefore remain a taboo subject, hermetically protected by his family and lawyers. A difficult position to accept for the fans but deemed necessary by the entourage of the former champion.

The family karting circuit has been abandoned

&In Kerpen, near Cologne, the “Michael Schumacher Kartbahn and Event Center”, this karting center owned 66% by the family, is now abandoned. However, this is where “Schumi” loved to drive during his adolescence. XXL posters celebrating his exploits still adorn the crumbling walls.

Personally, I turned the page on it some time ago“, confides Hans-Jürgen, a regular at the circuit's bar-restaurant. He adds: “It is obvious that the family and its secret belong to its private sphere. We must therefore respect each other, even if not having ever had the champion on the circuit is very sad. All this gives the impression that he is somewhere already gonei.”

Between the accident, the ongoing trial and this abandoned karting center, it is therefore difficult for the fans to mourn their idol.
