While some Windows applications are tending to disappear, Paint and Notepad still have a bright future ahead of them. And it is possible that soon, you will use these applications more often. Indeed, Microsoft has decided to bring these basic applications up to date thanks to artificial intelligence. In a blog post, the Redmond firm announces the start of testing new AI features for Paint and Windows Notepad.
Paint gets superpowers
Paint will no longer only be used to perform basic tasks, such as cropping an image or converting a PNG to JPEG. Indeed, Microsoft is preparing a feature called “Generative fill” for this application. In the example provided by the firm, the user selects part of a meadow image and asks the artificial intelligence to fill this part with a medieval castle. “Whether you’re a seasoned artist looking to add intricate details or a hobbyist experimenting with new ideas, Generative Fill helps you refine your digital art, with just enough AI to help you realize your creative vision while maintaining full control of the outcome,” Microsoft explains. Unfortunately, this feature will only be available on Copilot+ PCs with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Otherwise, Microsoft will also equip Paint with an equivalent of Google's magic eraser. In essence, it will be possible to remove an annoying object from an image, in just a few clicks. And, unlike Generative Fill, this feature will be available on all Windows 11 machines.
Windows Notepad becomes a powerful writing tool
For its part, Windows Notepad will offer a rewriting tool. In short, thanks to AI, the application will be able to improve sentences, adjust the tone or even adjust the text length. And the good news is that this new feature is already being tested in preview in France. It should therefore be available here when it is available on the stable version of Windows 11.
