Announced earlier this year, new Xboxes are expanding Microsoft's console lineup. And among the new versions launching on October 15, there is the new Xbox Series X without a disc drive which, as shown in a video published by Austin Evans' YouTube channel, has a few surprises under the hood. Indeed, barely released, the Xbox Series X Digital Edition was disassembled by the YouTuber, in order to show us the differences between it and the original version released in 2020.

Basically, Microsoft has revised a lot of things in terms of the internal design. First, since the new Xbox Series X doesn’t have a disc drive, it has a huge gap inside where the disc drive used to be on the 2020 version. On top of that, the Xbox Series X Digital Edition has copper heat pipe cooling, instead of the vapor chamber found on the 2020 Xbox Series X with disc drive. The vapor chamber is more efficient in cooling, but it’s also heavier and more expensive. Then, upon removing the motherboard, Austin Evans makes another discovery: Microsoft has revised and improved the design here too. Focus on weight, cost and efficiency ?

In essence, Austin Evans believes, following this teardown, that Microsoft has sought to lighten its console, while reducing its costs. But that's not all, since the new Xbox Series X without a disc drive also seems to have better energy efficiency. Indeed, according to the YouTube channel's comparisons, the 2020 Xbox Series X ran at 61 watts at idle, while the one without a disc drive ran at 38 watts. And during a test carried out with the game Forza Horizon, the 2020 Xbox Series X ran at 167 watts, compared to 156 watts for the version without a drive.

In other words, the new version consumes less energy. And although it uses a different cooling system, the heat emitted hardly changes. Now, it remains to be seen how consumers will react to the arrival of this digital edition of the Xbox Series X. As a reminder, Microsoft is selling this console at 499.99 euros.
