Microsoft Wants to Fire Its Low-Performing Employees (and Owns Up to It!)

When you work for a large company like Microsoft, you might feel safe, but that is clearly not the case. The company also seems to have a very tough and frontal approach where only the “strongest” survive. Let's take stock.

Getting rid of the least efficient employees

As indicated by the site Business Insider, the Redmond firm has planned job cuts. These are specifically aimed at employees deemed to be the company's worst performers, according to two sources familiar with management's plans who wish to remain anonymous.

Generally, such information is often denied, but that is not the case here. A spokesperson responded directly to our colleagues on this subject:

At Microsoft, we focus on high-performance talent. We are always working to help people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take appropriate action.

According to the specialized media, if people are fired because of their performance, Microsoft often replaces them numerically. In short, the workforce of 228,000 employees recorded last June should remain unchanged.

This human resources management by this means is also practiced elsewhere in the world of Tech. On the side of the company founded by Bill Gates, managers are already scrutinizing employee evaluations, including those of executives located at fairly high levels within the hierarchy. All divisions of the company are affected.

Mozilla's troubles

Beyond Microsoft, we are coming out of a long period of difficulty on the employment front within technology companies. To cite just one of many examples, we recently told you about Mozilla, the foundation that manages the Firefox browser. In difficulty, it proceeded to lay off 30% of its employees.

The head of communications for the Mozilla Foundation, Brandon Borrman, commented at the time:

The Foundation is reorganizing its teams to increase agility and impact as we accelerate our work to ensure a more open and equitable technical future for us all. This unfortunately means ending some of the work we have historically pursued and eliminating associated roles to focus more on the future.

More on this in our previous article here.

The bottom line:

  • Microsoft to lay off some employees
  • Selection criteria are based on performance
  • A spokesperson, when asked about this, assumes this strategy
