Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: Boxing legend defeated by YouTuber

Mike Tyson has been defeated in the ring by Jake Paul. The youngest heavyweight champion in the boxing history had not fought professionally for 19 years.

The fight was a tough one. Mike Tyson, 58, had not fought professionally since 2005 and it showed. The fight took place on the night of November 15-16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in front of 80,000 people and streamed live on Netflix. Despite the crowd chanting the heavyweight boxing legend's name, the fight was laborious for Mike Tyson, who after a first punch preferred to ensure his defense. He appeared tired, far from the champion that we could see 20 years ago.

The age difference largely explains Mike Tyson's defeat. Nearly 60, he was recently treated for a stomach ulcer and suffers from chronic sciatica. Meanwhile, Jake Paul, 27, is a controversial YouTuber who over 20 million subscribers and has recently turned to the world of professional boxing. Youth won out over Mike Tyson's experience and tired body. The rules had also been adapted, with eight two-minute rounds, instead of twelve three-minute rounds. The fight was also moved. Originally scheduled for July 20, it was postponed due to Mike Tyson's stomach ulcer.

“I have nothing to prove to anyone but myself”

After this long-awaited fight, in which the judges unanimously gave Jake Paul the winner, the young videographer expressed his admiration for his elder: “It's such an honor, Mike Tyson is a legend, the greatest in history, he inspired me. It was very hard as expected.” For his part, Mike Tyson assured that he was “happy” and had “nothing to prove to anyone but” himself. “I was happy with what I was able to do,” he added.

Why this fight ?

The duel between the two men comes from a line of Tyson on Paul. “I'm going to beat him up baby! I'm going to beat him up,” Jake Paul yelled again on stage at the microphone of the famous journalist Ariel Helwani. “He slaps like a bitch! Now it's personal! It's personal and HE MUST DIE!” the boxer said. A wager was set for the loser. Mike Tyson was to win an extra $5 million if he tried at least four rounds, but would have to get a tattoo saying, “I love Jake Paul” if he lost. It's unclear at this point whether the wager will be honored.
