Condominium owners will be gnashing their teeth. The mandatory modernization of elevator alarm systems, which will begin in 2025, is expected to cost them a small fortune. With no fewer than 630,000 elevators affected in France, this technological upgrade will impact the wallets of millions of co-owners.
The axe will therefore fall in 2025 with the scheduled shutdown of the 2G network by Orange, followed by SFR and Bouygues Telecom in 2026. 3G will follow the same path between 2028 and 2029. This technological development is forcing co-owners to modernize their elevator remote alarm systems, the famous yellow buttons that allow you to call for help in the event of a breakdown.
The bill is set to be particularly steep: the intervention to install the new system will cost between 800 and 1,500 euros depending on the complexity of the installation. But that's not all: the annual subscription will also skyrocket, going from an average of 400 euros to 800 euros per year. A dizzying increase that will directly impact condominium charges.

They even recommend planning ahead to avoid being surprised. Indeed, when teams work on an elevator not equipped with 4G, they automatically install the new system.
Aware of the scale of the project, the Elevator Federation tried to obtain additional time from telephone operators, in vain. No fewer than 232,000 communicating systems will need to be updated to 2G by the end of 2026, and 58,000 systems to 3G by 2028-2029. A real technological marathon is looming.
This new expense comes in an already tense context for co-owners. Between rising energy prices, increased environmental costs and increased salaries for maintenance staff, condominium budgets are already under severe strain.
For some co-ownerships, the switch to 4G could nevertheless have a positive impact: savings are possible on the operator subscription. A small consolation given the scale of the investments required.
