Federal Minister of National Revenue Marie-Claude Bibeau will run for mayor of Sherbrooke in municipal elections scheduled for next year.
The current MP for Compton-Stanstead confirmed Monday morning that she will finish her current term in Ottawa, but will not seek re-election in the next election.
She will instead try to be elected mayor of Sherbrooke as an independent candidate.
Ms. Bibeau has been a Member of Parliament in Ottawa since 2015. During the various terms of the Trudeau government, she was Minister of La Francophonie, International Development, Agriculture and Agri-Food, and has been Minister of National Revenue since July 2023.
She will therefore be in the running to succeed the current mayor of Sherbrooke, Évelyne Beaudin, who has already confirmed that she will not seek re-election in 2025.
Bibeau said her announcement on Monday does not mark the official start of her campaign, as she wants to focus full-time on her role as a federal MP until the end of her term.
The municipal general elections in Quebec will be held on November 2, 2025. In Ottawa, the next federal election will be held no later than October 20, 2025, but it could be held earlier due to the precarious situation of the Liberal minority government in the House of Commons.
Ms. Bibeau's spouse, Bernard Sévigny, was mayor of Sherbrooke from 2009 to 2017.
