Mondial de l'Auto: the Ford Explorer is American only in name

© Ford

Ford took its time, but a new electric vehicle has just make its arrival in the range of the American brand. While this new Explorer takes up the company's codes, it takes a step back from the Mustang Mach-e, Ford's other 100% electric solution.

< p>Designed for the European market, this new Explorer was built in German factories in collaboration with Volkswagen. The legendary German manufacturer was a great source of inspiration for Ford. The new version of the Explorer thus takes up the MEB platform, already used by VW. On the engine and battery side, these are the same components as on the ID. 4 and ID. 5.

This allows the new Explorer to offer 340 horsepower in its Extended Range version with 532 km of autonomy. This version is sold for 53,900 euros by the brand, but it is possible to save 10,000 euros with the entry-level. The Explorer Standard Range is offered at 43,900 euros. The car then has a small 52 kWh battery and a 170 horsepower engine.

You can add to this 3,600 euros for various options grouped within the “Premium Pack”. In the lot you will be entitled to 20-inch rims, LED matrix lights, the hands-free tailgate, a B&O sound system, sports seats and some decorative elements.

Ford Explorer: 2024 the year of change

As we said above, Ford has worked a lot with VW to set up this new version of the Explorer. If the changes are not necessarily visible at first glance, the bodywork is very similar to the thermal Explorer already marketed by Ford.

We find points of convergence in particular in the design of the front and rear lights. The sides of the rear wings are also very close to the 2022 version. Finally, the biggest difference between these two models is in the size of the electric Explorer.

The new version removes 59 centimeters from that of 2022. Ford thus goes from a large SUV more than 5 meters long to a much more compact model (4.46m).

A spacious, modern interior, made to convince you

Ford has worked a lot on the interior of its new Explorer. The American brand wanted to stand out with a large 14.6-inch vertical infotainment screen. But since this car was largely designed with Volkswagen technology, it features the German brand's navigation software, MIB 4.

In terms of seating, front passengers will be able to enjoy great comfort. You won't have to be very tall in the back. Since the car is half a meter smaller, it had to make sacrifices in one place. In addition to the space in the back, the trunk suffers in comparison with its German brothers. It is 446L, it is less good than the ID 4 and 5 of Volkswagen.
