Monoprix in a good position to take over the Casino des Allées store in Béziers

At 5 allées Paul-Riquet, the Casino brand should give way to Monoprix Léanne Brosed – Midi Libre

With the group's activity ceasing, Casino stores are closing their doors or being taken over by other brands throughout France. In Béziers, the brand located in the city center should come under the Monoprix banner.

The news is enough to delight fans of the brand… A Monoprix franchise (an independent company that sells the brand's products) is expected to take the place of the Casino, located at 5 allées Paul-Riquet. “The project is under consideration and we are working to make it a reality in the coming months,” the Casino group says succinctly. If the brand, in great financial difficulty, had to close its store located in the Polygone shopping center in Béziers on November 30, another fate is reserved for the business in the city center.

An arrival of Monoprix at the beginning of February 2025

According to information collected by Midi Libre, among the four candidates for the takeover, under the Monoprix banner, three of them visited the premises. The last visit was on Monday, December 30. After the switch, which would take place at the beginning of February, the store would remain open under the Casino banner initially, with a gradual supply of the Monoprix brand on the shelves.

Within the store, mum's the word. Employees have been instructed not to reveal the information communicated to them by management, but the subject is on everyone's lips.

“It never stops! We are contacted several times a day about the future of the store,” confides an employee, Customers are asking us what will happen, they are eager to know about the future of this point of sale and to know if they will find food again. They also want to know if we, the employees, will stay. All these years, it creates bonds.”

“We are asked several times a day about the future of the store”

Precisely, at the entrance to the store, Nicole watches through the glass door, trying to catch a glimpse of an employee she knows well, to ask her about the future of the store… A resident of Béziers since 2001, she knew the Monoprix brand at this location, before Casino moved in.

“I come to ask the employees I know well, because they have been working here for 10 years, she explains, amused.I heard that Monoprix is coming back to the Allées, that’s what they’re saying in the retirement home where I live… So much the better if it’s true! I discovered the brand in Béziers in 2001, which I liked a lot. Monoprix is more diversified, you can find lingerie, makeup, tableware or small decorations for the home, not to mention clothes! I still have some T-shirts, bought at that time, and I still wear them. It must be said that Mrs. Ménard (the wife of Robert Ménard, mayor of Béziers), worked hard for the return of Monoprix”.

A preemption of the business in progress

Indeed, the Ménard couple engaged in a power struggle with the Casino brand, by preempting the business (the commercial preemption right allows a municipality to have priority to buy a business) in order to prevent its sale by Casino to Intermarché, which had the ambition to install a Netto, a discount brand. The hearing that was to be held on December 11 before the expropriation judge has been postponed until next May. To be continued…
