A Molotov cocktail was thrown at the door of a Jewish community center in Montreal on the night of Sunday to Monday, a few hours after a meeting was held in in which two federal deputies participated.

The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) has opened an investigation to clarify this attempted arson attack against the premises of the Montreal Jewish Community Council, in the Côte-des-Neiges district.

Fortunately, the incendiary device thrown at the building quickly extinguished itself, before the firefighters arrived.

Coincidence or coincidence, the meeting that MPs Anthony Housefather and Rachel Bendayan attended earlier was intended to establish a security plan for the Jewish community living in Montreal and which has been the target of several acts of intimidation since the war that broke out between Hamas and Israel on October 7.

No one was present and the damage was minimal, said Rabbi Saul Emanuel, executive director of the Council, in a written statement.

Obviously, we abhor these actions. We very strongly denounce all forms of violence, all these cowardly attacks, all these terrorist tactics against any community, whatever they may be, added Mr. Emmanuel.

Since October 7, the SPVM has recorded on its territory 107 hate crimes or incidents against the Jewish community compared to 35 against the Arab-Muslim community.

That's twice as many events as in the entire year of 2022, both for the Jewish community and the Muslim community.

The fear is very real, and we will be there to support everyone's safety, assured MPs Housefather and Bendayan.

The SPVM also opened an investigation following anti-Israel graffiti painted over the weekend in the entrance to the parking lot of an elementary school Jewish from Saint-Laurent.
