Motion of censure against the Bayrou government: PS, RN,… what the parties plan to vote on after the general policy speech

Following François Bayrou's general policy speech on Tuesday, January 14, La France Insoumise filed a motion of censure to overthrow the government, which will be examined this Thursday, January 16 at the National Assembly.

While François Bayrou delivered his general policy speech on Tuesday, January 14, his government is under threat of a motion of censure. It was filed directly by Mathilde Panot, leader of the LFI deputies, and will be presented on Thursday, January 16 at the National Assembly.

There was never any doubt that the LFI deputies would vote for the motion of censure. After François Bayrou's speech, Mathilde Panot declared: “Mr. Prime Minister, the sooner you are gone, the better.” “We will censure you and we will finish with the reform of retirement at 64”, she added. Jean-Luc Mélenchon also declared that “those who do not vote for this motion of censure will be complicit in the ravages of Macron's policy.”

The environmental and social group will also vote on Thursday to censure François Bayrou's government, its leader, Cyrielle Chatelain, assured Tuesday.

“Within the environmental and social group, we were appalled, appalled by a poor speech, which was vague, which gave winks to the RN. The only thing we remembered was that the government will not go back on the pension reform, there will be no suspension. Ecology is 158 words after an hour and a quarter of speech. In two days we will vote for censure”, she reacted to the press.

They could vote for censure

The big question mark on the left is around the PS. “At this stage, we will censor, unless we have a clear answer” on pensions, declared Olivier Faure during the 8pm news on TF1. “I am waiting for the Prime Minister's answer, for him to tell us what he intends to do”, he added, when asked whether or not the PS would approve a motion of censure on Thursday.

“For us, things are clear, we remain in the opposition. We refuse the schemes and the combinations. We are not joining you,” declared Boris Vallaud, PS leader, during an intervention at the National Assembly. “We can vote for censure as early as Thursday, that's what many of our colleagues want”, also declared Philippe Brun, PS deputy.

As for the National Rally, Jean-Philippe Tanguy spoke of a “disappointment” after François Bayrou's speech. Jordan Bardella also speaks on X of a “soothing speech”, where“François Bayrou has shown that he is not the man of rupture, but of soft continuity, of chatter and of 'endless' consultation.” On the other hand, Sébastien Chenu declared that the RN will not “today” vote for censure, as he left the chamber after François Bayrou's speech.

On the right, Les Républicains and Laurent Wauquiez have already announced that they will not vote for censure. “We will not vote for censure, but we will judge text by text whether the directions taken are in line with the country's interests. We are taking our responsibilities, we are waiting for you to take yours” declared the deputy of Haute-Loire.

Unsurprisingly, the Macronist group (Renaissance, Modem, Horizons) will not vote for it either. Gabriel Attal also called on the socialists to “detach themselves from the most radical left”. Finally, Stéphane Lenormand declared that the LIOT group positioned itself “as an opposition but constructive group”. Only one deputy from the group had voted for the censure of the Barnier government. As a reminder, 289 votes are needed for the motion of censure to overthrow the government. The one against Michel Barnier received 331 votes.
