Tahar Rahim plays Charles Aznavour in a new biopic directed by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir. And the actor is almost unrecognizable in the first trailer shared on September 3.
Six years after his death, Charles Aznavour has become a movie character. The career of the Franco-Armenian singer is the subject of a film, soberly titled Monsieur Aznavour. Directed by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir (Patients, La vie scolaire), this biopic looks back at the beginnings of this son of refugees in with a veiled voice, who becomes one of the icons of French song through hard work and perseverance.
Tahar Rahim was chosen to play the lead role. While his acting talents are undeniable (two Césars for A Prophet, notable performances in The Serpent and The Designated Guilty,), his physical resemblance to Charles Aznavour did not seem obvious on paper. The actor also revealed in an exclusive interview with Le Parisien that he was “full of doubts” because of this lack of resemblance. But the trailer released on Tuesday, September 3, reveals for the first time the actor in disguise as a performer of La Bohème, and the result is surprising.
In addition to the physical resemblance that came with prosthetics and makeup, Tahar Rahim had to take singing lessons (eight hours a week for six months, he revealed to our colleagues). Result: the actor is almost unrecognizable in these first images, where he plays opposite Victor Meutelet (as Johnny Hallyday), Tigran Mekhitarian (as Missak Manouchian), Bastien Bouillon (Pierre Roche) or Camille Moutawakil (Aïda Aznavour) and Marie-Julie Baup (Edith Piaf). Monsieur Aznavour will be released in theaters on October 23, 2024.
Synopsis – Son of a refugee, small, poor, with a veiled voice, it was said of him that he had nothing to succeed. &By dint of work, perseverance and a will out of the ordinary, Charles Aznavour has become a monument of song, and a symbol of French culture.
