The French team will play the final phase of the League of Nations, but against whom and on what date&nbsp ;?

The opponent of the French team for the final phase of the League of Nations is now known. By finishing first in the group, the Blues made their task easier by avoiding Spain, Germany and Portugal in the next round. They will also play the quarter-final return leg at home in March 2025. Three potential opponents presented themselves against the Blues with Denmark, Croatia and especially the Netherlands who seemed to be the toughest opponent for the French team. It is finally Croatia that Les Bleus will face in a remake of the 2018 World Cup final. Here are the other matches, Netherlands – Spain, Denmark – Portugal, Italy – Germany,  The quarter-finals will take place from March 17 to 25.

The quarter-finals were planned according to classic home-and-away matches, before the semi-finals and the final, organized in single matches in a host country, as in previous editions.

Also for the first time, in addition to the quarter-finals, promotion and relegation play-offs between leagues have been planned. As in the first three editions, the last in each group is relegated to the lower league and the first is propelled to the higher league. The new feature is therefore a play-off between the third-placed teams in each group against the second-placed teams in the lower league, still according to the principle of two-legged matches. With League D comprising just six teams, only the top two teams have a chance of promotion, while the two worst fourth-placed teams in League C are doomed to relegation. To add to the stakes, four tickets to the 2026 World Cup play-offs have also been secured. reserved for the best teams in this Nations League, not qualified via the qualifiers.

The Nations League is organized into four leagues. The top four and the four runners-up from the League A groups qualify for the quarter-finals in two-legged matches, then the winners play in the Final Four (semi-finals + final).

The winners of the Leagues B, C and D groups are promoted to the higher leagues and the bottom teams from Leagues A and B are relegated to the lower leagues. Each team ranked third in its group play a two-legged play-off to stay up, against a second-placed team from the lower league who are playing for promotion.

Since League D only has 6 teams, only the two teams that came top of their group go up, and the two weakest fourth-placed teams from League C go down.

The 2024-2025 Nations League distributes four precious tickets for the 2026 World Cup play-offs. The top four nations in the ranking general of the League of Nations (a 4th in a League A group is just ahead of a 1st in a League B group for example), who are not already directly qualified for the World Cup or the play-offs via the qualifiers, win these tickets. These four teams will join the twelve teams that will have finished second in the group in the qualifiers, to be divided into four paths of four teams in the form of a semi-final and final in single matches, each path winner qualifying for the World Cup.
