Netflix vs Canal+: Which Adaptation of Werewolves is Better ?

“Let’s make a Werewolves ?” That’s a phrase we often hear during an evening with friends or family. Normal, Les Loups-Garous de Thiercelieux is the ideal board game to have fun when there are more of you. Each player is assigned a role: villagers (with or without powers) or werewolves. The principle is quite simple. The villagers must find out who the horrible werewolves are that devour them one by one every night.

It’s easy, it’s entertaining and it’s thrilling. In short, it’s no wonder that this party game is one of the most popular board games in France. The Werewolves of Thiercelieuxis so popular that it is currently benefiting from two adaptations on the small screen. Which is the best?? The one from Canal+ imagined by Panayotis Pascot and Fary or the one from Netflix with Franck Dubosc and Jean Reno?? Let's take stock.

Which adaptation of Loups-Garous should you see??

Netflix has chosen simplicity. The video streaming platform is adapting the board game into a feature film. The movie Werewolves follows the plot of the game with a little Jumanji twist since a family from today finds themselves thrown into a medieval village in the middle of the 15th century. As in the game, they will have to do everything to survive each night while waiting to unmask all the werewolves. And, as you can imagine, going from 2024 to the Middle Ages is far from easy. Especially when ferocious beasts are roaming and paranoia takes hold of the inhabitants of the village of Thiercelieux.

The new film presents itself as a family comedy like so many others. Netflix has put together all the ingredients to make Werewolvesentertainment for young and old. Unfortunately for the streaming platform, the spark does not take. Carried by Franck Dubosc and Jean Reno, the feature film does not bring anything original and even suffers from acute cheesiness by chaining stereotypes, slightly heavy jokes and themes that smell of reheated. All sprinkled with sadly distressing visual and sound effects. I still have chills.

What about the Canal+ program ? Panayotis Pascot and Fary saw things in a big way with a slightly more original concept. Titled Loups Garous (note, big difference with the Netflix movie), it is about a reality TV show where 13 hand-picked candidates compete in a life-size game. Canal+ is getting a little more involved than Netflix, offering a reinterpretation of Loups-Garous de Thiercelieux that is almost akin to a social experiment and, for that, does not hesitate to pull out all the stops.

The game series benefits from great resources to offer Fary the best part of Werewolvesof his life. At least, that is Panayotis Pascot's promise. The candidates are all fine bloodhounds, cut out for the game: a former spy, a mentalist, an investigative journalist, a criminal lawyer and a professional poker player. In short, it is very difficult to fool them. All carried by the voice and jokes of Mister V. The result is undeniable, we quickly get caught up in the game. Especially since Canal+ is careful not to reveal all the roles of the candidates. Unbeatable suspense. A word of advice: the series is even better when you watch it with other people. Note that 4 episodes have been released so far, and the first two episodes are available for free for everyone. In total, Loups Garous is composed of 8 episodes, with 2 episodes broadcast each week.

So, the adaptation of Loups-Garous de ThiercelieuxNetflix version or Canal+ version ? For our part, the choice seems quickly made. We would have liked to be more lenient with the film from the platform with the red N but even with the best will in the world, Loups-Garous is mediocre. At the same time, Fary and Panayotis Pascot surprised us a lot with an original and breathtaking adaptation of the famous party game. Come on, the village falls asleep and the werewolves wake up and everyone starts Canal+…
