New Emojis Are Coming: What to Expect ?

In order for all platforms to have the same emojis, these little symbols, which have completely integrated our modern modes of communication, are standardized. This standardization role is ensured by the Unicode consortium, which regularly publishes the list of new emojis, which are then adopted by operating systems and mobile applications. And recently, an internal document revealed the list of new emojis that could arrive with the Unicode 17.0 standard.

More precisely, according to the Emojipedia site, a document published by Unicode shows the new emojis proposed by the Emoji Standard & Research Working Group. In essence, these are proposals that still need to be validated, but which have a good chance of landing on our keyboards, later. Moreover, the list of brand new emojis proposed is very interesting. New emojis include:

• A distorted face
• A fighting cloud
• A ballet dancer
• An apple core
• A killer whale
• A Bigfoot-inspired creature
• A paperclip
• A landslide
• A treasure chest

New symbols that won't arrive for a long time

According to Emojipedia, the Emoji Standard & Research Working Group has proposed a total of 164 new emojis. But the vast majority of these new ones are just variations of existing symbols, unlike the brand new concepts mentioned above. Unfortunately, these new emojis won’t be arriving on our devices for a while. Indeed, the Unicode 17 standard is not expected to be validated until September 2025. Then, once the standard is confirmed, smartphone manufacturers and mobile app developers will still take some time to adopt Unicode 17 in their software.

As for the meaning of the different symbols, the Emoji Standard & Research Working Group associates a series of keywords with each of its proposals. The deformed head is associated with the following terms: “Vulnerable, light, airy, swollen”. But, as you may already know, the internet tends to find different meanings for emojis. For example, the thumbs-up emoji, which is normally a sign of validation, is sometimes perceived as a passive-aggressive emoji by some people.

• Unicode regularly adds new concepts to the list of emojis available on our smartphones
• And it is preparing a new list for the Unicode 17 standard, which will be validated in 2025
• Among the proposals, there are new symbols, such as a deformed head, a bigfoot, etc.
• But we will have to wait a little longer, because after the validation of Unicode 17 in September 2025, we will have to wait for its adoption by Apple, Google, and other companies
