A few hours before the appointment of the Prime Minister and the composition of the government, the resigning team is holding its breath. Who will be reappointed?? Only a few former ministers have a chance of staying.
The day after the vote of censure that brought down the Barnier government, Emmanuel Macron spoke out and announced his desire for a “tight government”.
A complicated situation for those hoping to be part of the future team. Initially, there were 41 ministers, but in the end, only a few will remain.
Some ministers seem more likely to stay, according to Le Parisien. This is the case of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. “We need continuity”, explains a member of the government. “Otherwise, internationally, they will exploit our divisions.” Appointed less than three months ago, Barrot, who has travelled around the world in 80 days, has made a name for himself thanks to current events and international crises. Vice-president of the MoDem, he could stay in office, especially if François Bayrou obtains Matignon.

In office in the Armed Forces for two and a half years, he has managed to build a solid diplomatic and political network that could help him in the event of a promotion. Close to Emmanuel Macron and his wife, a former LR still appreciated by part of his political family, his name is on the “short list” for Matignon.
If he does not obtain Matignon, Lecornu could keep his position as a consolation. Foreign policy seems to be an area where Macron wants to maintain some continuity.
Far from sovereign concerns, two ministers, who have already survived a change of government and have become close to Emmanuel Macron, could extend their mandate. Rachida Dati (Culture) and Catherine Vautrin (Territories), who both evolved politically to join Macron, have several assets: their right-wing past, their loyalty to Macron and their ties to the LR party. This could be an asset for Macron, who advocates political recomposition, according to Le Parisien.
François Bayrou, Sébastien Lecornu or Bernard Cazeneuve, who are among the favorites for Matignon, would all like to keep these two very political women in their team. The same goes for Bruno Retailleau, who, although appointed only last September, has managed to impose himself in public opinion and arouses admiration. “I never thought I'd say this, but Retailleau is remarkable”, admits a left-wing Macronist.
Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon could also stay in office. “She didn't let herself down and gave her all”, a colleague points out. The spokesperson was able to assert herself and strike the right tone. As for the Budget Minister, Laurent Saint-Martin, he also proved to be a “everyone's favorite”, especially on the Republican right.
