Nicole Caumet and the local Secours Catholique team inaugurated this new space, rue des Collines, on Thursday, January 17, in the presence of its president Jean-Marie Brugeron, the parish priest Frère Bruno, and Chantal Carrion, elected delegate for solidarity and social justice.
“Our premises on rue Andrans in the city center are being kept for the flea markets on the 1st Thursday and 3rd Saturday of the month,” explains Nicole Caumet. And we will continue our office hours at the Muhammad-Yunus center on Friday mornings. But this new premises that the city hall has allocated to us is in the heart of a working-class city and a residential neighborhood. It is this social mix that interests us in developing activities other than social reception. Academic support has already been launched. Gabrielle and Rosemarie, French teacher and retired schoolteachers bring their skills to enrolled children.”
Youcef Abdel-Hamid and Lana are the first to benefit from academic support. If necessary, other slots can be added (depending on the availability of volunteers).
“Many people are alone”
Other workshops will be offered: games, mosaics, well-being relaxation, computer science “to remedy the digital divide”, coffee meetings so that people can exchange, listen. “ Many people are alone, it is the goal of Secours Catholique to create links between lonely people.”
Walks in the nearby Gardiole and shared meals are also planned. “This Frontignan team illustrates the axes and fundamentals of Secours Catholique, said Jean-Marie Brugeron, president of Secours Catholique de l'Hérault. Working with the municipalities, in conjunction with the parish, in actions that are necessary today and for the future.”
Secours Catholique de l'Hérault is made up of 700 volunteers, 45 local branches and a team of employees with 5 facilitators to support all forms of economic and social insecurity. In Frontignan, the poverty rate is 16% (2021 Insee figures), and Secours Catholique de Frontignan is looking for new volunteers to continue its work.
