Meta and Microsoft have just announced two layoff plans at almost the same time. While these strategies may be shocking in France, especially given the stratospheric profits recorded by these two groups, they are better accepted in the United States. Let's take stock.

5% of Meta employees concerned

The company founded and led by Mark Zuckerberg plans to lay off 3,600 employees, or 5% of its workforce. The idea is to get rid of employees deemed to be the least efficient, according to an internal memo, before hiring other employees to replace them. So this is not a job loss.

In any case, we can imagine that this prospect clearly does not please employees and creates a climate of fear internally. However, this technique is fully assumed and claimed by Mark Zuckerberg, who thus underlines:

I have decided to raise the bar in terms of performance management and to eliminate poor performers more quickly.

Microsoft will cut its workforce

At the same time, Microsoft will lay off employees in various branches of the group, including security, sales, and video games. A spokesperson confirmed the information from Business Insider, but did not want to quantify it. He describes the size of this plan as “modest”. As for the employees concerned, they have started receiving emails.

Our colleagues explain that this announcement comes at a time when Microsoft has made security one of its top priorities. This follows several major incidents where Chinese hackers managed to access the emails of thousands of customers.

Microsoft also lays off based on performance

This news concerning the Redmond firm is to be distinguished from another initiative during which the tech giant wants to lay off the least performing employees. A spokesperson for the group thus underlined: . More information on this subject here.
